Be Aware of Unsolicited Phone Calls Involving “Spoofed” Court Phone Numbers

Thursday, November 9, 2023

Residents of the Northern District of Georgia have reported receiving phone calls where the caller ID appears to show a phone number associated with the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. When the person answers, they either hear nothing or the caller attempts to sell them Medicare or Medicaid. Some residents say they have received multiple calls in a row. Please be advised that these phone calls are not from the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. Instead, the caller has engaged in caller ID “spoofing,” which is when they deliberately falsify the information transmitted to a recipient’s caller ID display to disguise their identity. You should not give these callers personal information, gift card numbers, credit card numbers, or money.

In addition, ongoing scams continue in which callers falsely claim that the recipient failed to show up for jury duty and must provide a gift card number or otherwise make payment to avoid arrest. More information about these scams is available here
